About DHC

How is the Dallas Housing Coalition funded?

The Dallas Housing Coalition is supported by several corporate and philanthropic organizations, namely Charles Schwab, the Dallas Foundation, the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, and U.S. Bank Foundation.

We are also currently raising funds through our inaugural Housing Summit Thursday, November 21, 2024 and anticipate this event will return annually.

Is the Dallas Housing Coalition a non-profit?

Yes, we are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization as determined by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Our sole mission is to advocate for the creation and preservation of attainable housing in the city of Dallas for all and that is consistent across our applications and required filings with the IRS. The Office of the Secretary of State for the State of Texas filed our certificate of formation on September 18, 2023.

Are non-profits legally allowed to lobby?

Yes. This section of The Nonprofit Lobbying Guide by Bob Smucker (second edition, 1999) and the Internal Revenue Service’s website explains further. The majority of the Dallas Housing Coalition’s resources are dedicated to communications, community organizing, and educational efforts.

Is the Dallas Housing Coalition non-partisan?

Yes.

How did the Dallas Housing Coalition start?

Despite previous attempts, sustained housing advocacy efforts dissipated over time in Dallas. Today’s housing crisis demanded a response, which began with internal meetings over the summer of 2022. By leveraging our members’ networks and resources, we are committed to sustaining ourselves. While the specific issues the Coalition tackles may change, the goal remains the same: supporting housing for all.

Are there membership dues or fees?

There are zero financial requirements for organizations and individuals to become members of the coalition.

How does the Dallas Housing Coalition decide what issues to weigh in on?

Through membership surveys, input at regularly occurring member meetings, and oversight by our Steering Committee, the Dallas Housing Coalition’s work and what specific policies, plans, and initiatives the coalition chooses to weigh in on are guided by the below:

What are the Organizer and Steering Committee roles?

The Organizer handles day-to-day activities of the Dallas Housing Coalition, informs and mobilizes Coalition members, coordinates Coalition meetings and programming, and represents the Coalition in municipal and community settings.
